Harvey Nic's SS11 Fashion Show

Furore PR girls Stacey, Nicola and Steph (L-R) hit the fabulous Harvey Nichols Spring Summer 2011 fashion show this week, and thought we'd share their takes on the new season trends with all you Furore Style fans!

Champagne in hand we were led to the VIP front-row seats right by the red-carpeted catwalk, where we found our goodie bags (including two bottles of Harvey Nichols wine- yay vino!)

The event was introduced by store manager Kevin Breese as a live DJ played some cool tracks. Then the models (male and female as the Birmingham Harvey Nic's caters well for both) showcased each new season trend.
Kevin Breese- Store Manager
First up- 70's Glamour
A huge trend for SS11 harks back to the time of free love and hippy chic. These flared jeans were a key player, often teamed with tailored shirts, and the models' huge crimped hair as done by celebrity stylist Royston Blythe channelled the 70s vibe effortlessly. Flashes of red sole were the order of the day (Mr. Louboutin you genius) as were chunky wedges- great with the flare.

Next up, the delicious male models (more on them later!) showcased Trailer Trash and  Summer Rock- - mixed distressed denims with stud detailing were worn with white Converse or Toms slip-ons and casual T-shirts were paired with nude trousers and shorts. Coloured hoodies were an easy-to wear take on male colour blocking- another huge trend for SS11.

The colourful variety of Liquorice Allsorts was the theme of the next trend.
This was colour block at it's best- vibrant jewel-toned dresses like this blue Paul Smith number...  are an easy way to hit the nail on the head, but the trend can also be done using brightly coloured accessories (see our other blog post on the Vogue and Selfridges SS11 Trend report here...)

Paul Smith SS11

Jimmy Choo SS11
Swimwear and Beachwear was the theme of the next collection- Bare Necessities and Beach Bums. Cue hot semi-naked male models and sashaying bikini-clad ladies which caused a bit of a stir in the audience! For obvious reasons it was difficult to focus on their clothing, but bright colours, clean whites and flirty ruffles were the basics, plus quirky trilbys, floaty katfans and stunning floral cover-ups.

Desert Queen saw a distinct colour pallate of khaki, camel, nude and beige plus animal prints and stacked bangles. Think fashionista on safari and you've got it! A sporty practicality came through from the vests, cropped cargo trousers and flattering draping, but the glam factor shone trough in killer heels and hot sunglasses. I personally loved these awesome Camilla Skovgaard sculpural heels...

The men looked sharp in Dolce & Gabbana's sleek SS11 colllection- think high-end sportswear with polished accents like metallic thread and the D&G metal logo to the left back pocket.

Next up- Florals. Always a winner for Spring/Summer, my personal favourite from the show was this glorious Roberto Cavalli silk dress, shown here at two different fashion shows- Milan and Birmingham...

The next two sections were Soft Tailoring for the boys- sharp dark suits and subtle texture softened with funky T-shirts, rolled-up sleeves and lighter trousers, and Clinical Elegance for the girls- white, white, white!

The final collection was Night Crawlers- men about town looking dark, delicious and dapper! Shiny pointed shoes and a sneaky bit of sparkle or decadent velvet added a shine to the dark palette.

All in all a great night (though no canapes this time- Selfridges you get a brownie point for that!) and we are looking forward to getting stuck in to the new season fashions!

Furore Fashionistas hit Vogue's SS11 Preview at Selfridges

On Thursday night the Furore PR girls attended Vogue's preview of the Spring/Summer 2011 fashion trends on the designer top floor of Birmingham's Selfridges.

Fuelled only by Pizza Hut and designer-label-lust, we sipped champagne and nibbled on delicious mini-desert canapés (the raspberry pavlova one was my personal fave), as a quirky guitar player serenaded us and we browsed the luxury goods. Nav couldn't stop trying on Louboutins and Steph purchased this FABULOUS Alexander McQueen skull ring...

The event was intimate and quite informal, with only around 30 (obviously highly select- duh- we were there!) people seated for the show. Selfridge's Head of Press introduced the event and welcomed British Vogue's friendly American executive fashion editor Calgary Avansino, who looked stunning in a 3.1 Phillip Lim asymmetric nude sequined dress (yes this sounds oxymoronic but it looked FAB).

Calgary talked through each of the outfits as the achingly-beautiful models sashayed down the short runway, commenting on how then channelled key new season trends.

Here's a round-up of the trends to watch in the coming season:

COLOUR- After a season of muted shades, a refreshing splash of colour is the biggest trend of the SS11 catwalks, with key colours being ‘tangerine’ and all shades of blue- particularly if worn together. Clashing is cool, as is wearing with crisp white (not exactly a bright gem-like colour but it brings out the vibrancy of other colours and is a classic summer staple). Conversely, nude is still in, but mix with brighter colours or metallics to bring it up-to-date. Victoria Beckham’s SS/11 collection below ROCKS the colour block trend (and the draping/pleating I’ll come to later!):

Victoria Beckham SS11

FLORAL- Prints inspired by nature embody springtime and can be worn throughout the season. Especially prevalent on the catwalks were floral maxi gowns worn with flats, but florals can be brought in subtly too for example through culottes and accessories. This Stella McCartney vintage-wallpaper-esque dress was my favourite in the whole show:

GATHERING/PLEATING- This season the technique of gathering or pleating fabric will be mega, but it will be artful and precise rather than Grecian, and will mostly be seen on dresses and skirts. Also big is dainty draping, which is best teamed with more structured pieces for an edgy contrast. See VB’s collection above for this kind of detailing.

SPORT LUXE- SS11’s modern take on sporty started in New York and is slick: think mesh and hi-tech fabrics, bandeau tops and racer backs. American baseball jackets are already all over the high street and are a more laid-back way to channel the trend.

ARTISAN CRAFTSMANSHIP- Homespun handicrafts add textured details; from appliqué, crochet and macramé to fringing, tassels and feathers. Modern craft is also a perfect look for the approaching festival season, and the handmade vibe is easily created through choice accessories.Stella McCartney’s stunning asymetric dress showcases this trend perfectly (and floral too!):

Stella McCartney's beautiful take on applique

There will also be a huge 70's trend all over the catwalks and high street- think flares, floppy brimmed hats and big hair (the exception to the hair trend discussed below!)

ACCESSORIES- Key shoe trends are patent, wedge and textured, and other fun accessories include costume hats, chunky cuffs, gym pant-style knickers and scarves (especially chic worn round the head).

HAIR- There are two main trends approaching this year; slick and sleek, or voluminous and curly. For the first look it has to be a centre parting, or scrape hair up into a top-knot. For the second look, almost anything goes, as long as it’s big and bouncy- think 70’s!

MAKE-UP- The focus for faces is on a clear complexion, with a ‘pop’ of colour either on eyes (purple is a big trend) or lips (ditto with red).

Other one-word trends to look out for: 70’s, stripes, backless and biker. The jacket of the season is the summer trench or mac, but biker jackets will also be huge.

Happy trend spotting!

HIS Hair Clinic hits Harley Street baby!

Ground breaking men’s treatment centre and Furore faves, HIS Hair Clinic are opening up a new premises in the Big Smoke, but not just anywhere... Harley Street dah-ling!

Launched nine years ago by Ian Watson and his sister in law Ranbir Rai-Watson, the pioneering pair created an innovative scalp procedure called Micro Hair Technique (MHT). The technique uses a non-surgical scalp pigmentation process to replicate the look of incredibly short individual hairs on balding areas on the scalp, which cleverly disguises signs of hair loss.

The effect created is of a short, almost-shaved hair style popular with celebrities such as Vin Diesel, Justin Timberlake and Wentworth Miller (go on then, let's have some pictures of them 'cos they're gorgeous...)

Managing Director Ian Watson said ‘There are so many men out there that are suffering from hair loss and their first response is to panic and to worry about hair replacement systems and hair transplants. MHT allows men to conceal their hair loss whilst still being able to maintain a stylish and natural hairstyle.’

The MHT Technique is not just for balding men: it can even cover scars, receding hairlines and thicken thinning hair to give men that extra boost of confidence.
Clients will be able to arrange appointments at the Harley Street clinic (number 100) from 8th February 2011 for face to face consultations and the MHT procedure.

Along with the new clinic on Harley Street, HIS Hair Clinic also has clinics located in Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow in the UK and Malaga and Marbella in Spain.
In 2010 HIS Hair Clinic even launched in the US due to a huge demand for the MHT treatment, which is currently available in LA and will be available in New York in 2011... Hurrah!
